Botox injections block nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. Their most common use is to temporarily relax the facial muscles responsible for wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. Botox injections are also used to treat conditions that affect bodily functions.
Most people do not experience much discomfort during the procedure. However, you may want your skin numbed beforehand, particularly if your palms or the soles of your feet are being treated for excessive sweating. Your doctor may use one or more methods to numb the area, such as topical anaesthesia, ice or vibration anaesthesia, which uses massage to reduce discomfort.
Botox injections are usually performed in a doctor's office. Your doctor uses a fine needle to inject small amounts of botulinum toxin into your skin or muscles. The number of injections required depends on several factors, including the size of the treatment area.
Do not rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours. This may help prevent the toxin from spreading to another area. You can return to your normal activities immediately after the procedure.
Botox injections generally begin to take effect one to three days after treatment. Depending on the condition being treated, the effect may last three months or longer. Regular follow-up injections are needed to maintain the effect.
