Gynecomastia is a condition defined by excessive breast enlargement in men. This enlargement can be caused by underlying health problems. Gynecomastia surgery addresses the development of female-type breast tissue in men. Also known as male breast reduction, this procedure may be chosen for both health and aesthetic reasons.

Gynecomastia caused by irregular or imbalanced oestrogen and testosterone levels can lead to problems such as loss of self-confidence and restrictions on movement in daily life.

Symptoms of gynecomastia can include:

  • Swelling of breast tissue.
  • Nipple discharge from one or both breasts.
  • One breast being slightly larger than the other.
  • Breast pain or tenderness.
  • A lump beneath the nipple.

Gynecomastia Procedures

Before gynecomastia treatment, hormonal or other underlying causes of breast enlargement must be diagnosed and treated. Surgery can then restore the enlarged area to the desired appearance.

Four types of gynecomastia procedures are described:

  • Mixed gynecomastia: excess glandular tissue and fat.
  • Glandular gynecomastia: firm breast tissue.
  • Fatty gynecomastia: fatty tissue.
  • Other gynecomastia: enlarged breast tissue and excess skin.
